Shaking It Out

Florence Welch is an extraordinary role model for young women and a phenomenal talent – she’s brave, passionate, playful, imaginative, feminine, sexy and in my opinion, has the most beautiful voice.

Her music needs turning up. Loudly. Her lyrics need listening to.

I am electing “Shake it Out” as the best song to turn the volume up on this New Years Eve. It is definitely one of my favourite songs of the year.

And it’s hard to dance with the devil on your back, so shake him off…

What is it that you need to shake off or shake out as the new year approaches? Listen to this song and give some thought to those devils on your back… how did they get there? What part do you play in keeping them there? Can you liberate those demons and dance more freely?

Write for as long or as little as you like. Just write.
Here’s to love, health, creativity, courage and inspiration in 2012 xoxo

Commitment

2012 is fast approaching and instead of compiling my usual list of tired resolutions, which often spend the first few months of the year staring at me and making unpleasant faces, I am going to simply ponder on the word commitment.  What is it that I would like to commit to in the coming year?  What have I successfully committed to in the past, and what have I walked away from?

There are many different definitions of the word, but the one I am most drawn to is simply:

when you are willing to give your time and energy to something that you believe in, or a promise or firm decision to do something.

What are you willing to give your time and energy to in 2012?  What do you believe in?  Are you willing to make a promise to do something?  If you break that promise, can you forgive yourself and try again and not throw your commitment away?

I encourage you to commit to writing for ten minutes on commitment.  Don’t edit.  Go…

Noise

“The avoidance of the anxiety of solitude by constant agitated diversion is what Kierkegaard, in a nice simile, likened to the settlers in the early days of America who used to beat on pots and pans at night to make enough din to keep the wolves away…”  Rollo May 1975

What is your ‘agitated diversion’?  What din do you make to keep the wolves away?  This is an absurdly busy time of year… take ten minutes of silence and see what creeps into the space.  What words lie dormant in the quiet?  Before you are tempted to pick up your pots and pans – take another ten minutes and write something down.  Go…

Welcome to Write To Be You…

As the year draws to a close many of us are thinking about how we would like 2012 to be different. What changes can we make?  What can we add or delete from our lives? Or from our Facebook pages?!  I would like to delete technology.  Some of it.  It pulls me away from the world, while pretending to connect me, and yet… here I am embarking on a blog. Why am I here?  Because in January 2012 I plan to start a community.  A small community of people – not only on line – but also in person.  A community looking to connect, write, read, express, listen, feel, and be heard.
Write to Be You Therapeutic Writing Workshops will be run in West LA.  No one knows about them yet…so here is my seed.  Planted.  I will water it.  Chat to it. Write to it. Believe in it.

Watch this space grow… and please contribute…
