Ready, Steady, Write # 19

Ready, Steady, Write has been quiet for a while…

Where are you?

I’m not going anywhere

But these two did.

What story does this image inspire you to write?

Get back on your bike!

Sometimes you just need to feel the earth beneath your feet. Wheels can carry us faster across the uneven terrain, but what one gains in speed is sometimes unequal to what it lost by being so far from the ground. The earth didn’t appear terribly nourishing that day, patchy with snow and dead grasses and tired-looking trees, but I wanted to walk on it anyway.

“But the bikes,” he lamely protested, gesturing to the empty surrounding field in search of potential thieves. We were miles from anyone at that point.

I kissed his cheek and put his bike on a low tree branch to make a point. He laughed. I deployed the kickstand on my bike beside the tree. I extended my hand and he took it. The sun was dipping low in the winter sky and we walked toward it, listening to our footsteps.

She can see his exhale into the crisp morning air. His nose and cheeks are already turning red but he is exhilarated; his lips curved upward into a smile. She hears the sound of short inhales as he quickly approaches. He’s about to pass her. He always likes to show off. She loves it when he does. She’s in no hurry anyway. They are headed up a hill.

Her legs pump up and down with a sense of heaviness. She’s lifting herself off the seat in an attempt to gain some ground. It’s chilly outside but she’s sweating. Droplets fall from her brow as she hunkers down to make a last push to the top. She’s arrived.

To the side, she sees his hung his bike up on the branch of a tree. She smirks, “That’s such a guy thing to do.” She gently rests her bike against the trunk, takes off her gloves and basks in the aroma of fresh coffee. It’s time for breakfast.
